Equine Acuscope/Myopulse Therapy

WHAT IS IT?

The Electro-Acuscope and Electro-Myopulse Therapy System is a non-invasive microcurrent therapy used to support healing and recovery in equine and canine patients. This advanced electrotherapy modality delivers low-voltage current designed to respond to the body’s individual needs, helping to reduce pain, inflammation, and swelling associated with injury and overuse.

Originally developed for human medical use, the Acuscope and Myopulse instruments are FDA-approved and have been used in hospitals, physical therapy clinics, and sports medicine settings since 1978. For more than 40 years, these instruments have also been successfully applied in animal therapy to address a wide range of musculoskeletal, neurologic, and soft tissue conditions.

The system uses computerized feedback technology to detect abnormalities in nerve signaling and automatically adjust the microcurrent output. This self-regulating process continues until normal conductive patterns are restored within the tissue. Built-in feedback guides the practitioner throughout treatment, helping ensure accuracy while minimizing the risk of overtreatment.

When used with animals, the instruments can be calibrated to account for higher metabolic rates compared to humans. This allows for precise, safe application in both large and small animals.

THE BENEFITS OF MICRO-CURRENT THERAPY

Microcurrent therapy is a scientifically supported therapeutic modality used to address a wide range of injuries and conditions, as well as for general maintenance and recovery. As a form of electrotherapy, microcurrent delivers a safe, low-level electrical current designed to work in harmony with the body.

Microcurrent is significant because it operates at the same electrical level naturally produced by the body. This allows the body to recognize and respond to the current more efficiently during treatment. Microcurrent is measured in microamperes—one millionth of an ampere—yet this small amount of current plays a critical role in supporting cellular function, tissue repair, and recovery from injury.

The Electro-Acuscope/Myopulse Therapy System is recognized for maintaining individual FDA approval for each instrument model currently available. When used according to manufacturer specifications and FDA guidelines, this therapy system has been deemed safe and effective for a variety of applications.

Potential Benefits Include:

  • Support for neuromuscular and musculoskeletal conditions

  • Non-invasive pain management

  • Accelerated recovery for a wide range of injuries and conditions*

*Accelerated recovery rates are based on clinical observations and published research when treatments are administered properly and in compliance with FDA guidelines.

Electro-Acuscope

The Acuscope supports the body’s natural healing processes by improving circulation of blood and oxygen to the affected area while normalizing the electrical signaling of the nervous system. This occurs through both the Central Nervous System—the body’s primary control center where nerves originate in the brain and spinal cord—and the Peripheral Nervous System, where nerves branch throughout the body to transmit signals to tissues and organs.

The Acuscope is designed to normalize abnormal electrical current within the nervous system, helping to reduce inflammation, address inflamed tissue, support bony injuries, and assist in wound care. By restoring proper electrical balance, the body is better able to recognize dysfunction and initiate repair.

A key feature that distinguishes the Acuscope from other electrical stimulation devices is its advanced microchip circuitry, which allows the instrument to both monitor tissue response and deliver therapy simultaneously. The Acuscope provides real-time auditory tones and numerical readings that identify areas of cellular dysfunction. These biofeedback indicators guide the practitioner in locating priority treatment areas and adjusting therapy accordingly.

Unlike conventional electrical stimulation units that operate using a preset, fixed output, the Acuscope continuously reads neurological impedance (resistance) within the circuit created by the tissue between the probes or electrodes. Based on this information, the instrument calculates and delivers precise corrective waveforms tailored to the tissue’s immediate needs.

The ultimate goal of the Acuscope is to identify areas of cellular dysfunction throughout the body and normalize electrical current at the nerve cell level, allowing the body to restore balance and function more efficiently.

BIOFEEDBACK & AI TECHNOLOGY

One of the most significant advantages of this therapy system for animal applications is its integrated biofeedback technology with animal-calibrated programming. These animal-specific instruments are available exclusively through Animal Therapy Systems (ATS) and authorized ATS dealerships.

The system utilizes a sophisticated monitoring platform through pre-programmed computer circuitry—often referred to as Artificial Intelligence (AI). Each animal-calibrated instrument is programmed with species-specific cellular and physiological data, allowing the device to continuously assess tissue response and internally adjust its output in real time. This adaptive capability enables the instrument to deliver precisely what each individual animal requires during every session. When used correctly and with proper animal calibration, the risk of overstimulation is eliminated.

Proper programming and calibration are essential for effective animal applications due to fundamental physiological differences between humans and animals. Even among different animal breeds, cellular function can vary by as much as 30–90%. If this critical information is not embedded within the instrument’s circuitry, the practitioner is limited to a fixed-output treatment. In such cases, the instrument loses its biofeedback capability and delivers a non-adaptive microcurrent, increasing the risk of overstimulation and reducing therapeutic effectiveness.

Because of these significant physiological variations, the use of properly calibrated equipment—combined with comprehensive, manufacturer-approved training—is essential to achieve optimal results.

We proudly offer the only manufacturer-approved animal training program in the industry, ensuring both practitioner competency and the highest standard of care for animal patients.

THE IMPORTANCE OF BIOFEEDBACK IN ANIMAL THERAPY

By utilizing the biofeedback system within each instrument, a properly trained and experienced therapist can interpret both the audible tones and numerical readings that reflect the level of conductivity occurring within the tissue between treatment probes. These real-time readings guide clinical decision-making and allow the practitioner to determine the most effective course of therapy for each individual animal.

Swelling and inflammation are represented by elevated numerical values on the LED display, accompanied by higher-pitched tones. Acuscope readings help identify areas of cellular dysfunction, directing the practitioner to prioritize treatment where it is most needed. The instrument is capable of pinpointing precise locations of excessive heat and fluid accumulation in acutely damaged tissue, as well as identifying chronic conditions—areas of cellular deficiency where tissue has entered an energy-depleted state.

Low numerical readings and lower tones indicate tissue that is unable to complete the healing process independently and is struggling to return to a normal, healthy state without intervention. Additionally, the Acuscope can assist in identifying compensatory areas elsewhere in the body that have become sore or painful as a result of a primary injury or imbalance, allowing for a more comprehensive and effective treatment approach.

This biofeedback-driven capability is the primary factor that distinguishes this therapy system from other modalities currently available in the animal industry. A thorough understanding of biofeedback and the importance of proper animal calibration directly correlates with a higher level of success when treating both large and small animals.

Please Note: There are only two recognized types of calibration—human or animal. A so-called “dual calibration” or a system claimed to be “programmed for all living tissuedoes not exist and is not recognized by the manufacturer. We strongly encourage practitioners and consumers alike to protect themselves—and the animals in their care—by ensuring that equipment is properly calibrated and manufacturer-approved for animal use.

Electro-Myopulse

The Myopulse is the companion instrument to the Acuscope and is used in conjunction with it to complete the full capabilities of the therapy system. Its unique design utilizes a sinusoidal waveform, allowing for direct access to and focused treatment of soft and connective tissues, including muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia, and periosteum.

The Myopulse biofeedback system is programmed to normalize the electromagnetic field surrounding these tissues while complementing the Acuscope’s role in regulating the nervous system. For soft and connective tissue to properly repair and recover from injury, accurate signals must be transmitted through both the Central Nervous System and the Peripheral Nervous System. Once these signals are restored, the Myopulse works at the tissue level to normalize fiber function, supporting a more efficient and accelerated recovery process.

In addition, the Myopulse enhances blood flow and circulation by relieving vascular constriction commonly caused by tight or restricted soft tissue. As the instrument promotes true relaxation and normalized tissue function, circulation is able to resume more effectively, supporting oxygen delivery and metabolic waste removal.

This adaptive, biofeedback-driven approach makes the Myopulse an essential component of athletic care, routine maintenance, and rehabilitation, ensuring that each treatment is internally adjusted to meet the specific needs of every patient.

The Importance Of Energy Requirements

The body is composed of an immense number of cells, each functioning in many ways like a small battery—storing and releasing energy as it performs essential tasks such as nutrient absorption, waste elimination, tissue repair, and cellular reproduction. Every cell carries a measurable electrical charge that must be maintained in order for normal physiological function to occur.

Energy flows continuously between cells through the body’s intricate electrical network. When injury or trauma affects living tissue, this electrical balance is disrupted. Following an initial surge in activity, there is often a measurable decline in energy production and energy flow within the affected cells and surrounding tissues. This disruption is commonly associated with pain and can impair the body’s ability to fully repair itself.

As a result, prolonged rest periods and reduced activity are frequently prescribed to allow the body time to gradually restore normal cellular function. However, without addressing the underlying disruption in cellular energy, the healing process can be delayed or incomplete.

HOW ANIMALS RESPOND TO TREATMENTS

In many cases, animals demonstrate noticeable improvements immediately following treatment, with continued progress observed over the next several days. Within one week, most conditions show significant improvement. Chronic conditions may require multiple sessions before initial changes are evident; however, Acuscope and Myopulse therapies are recognized for their ability to support resolution in conditions that might otherwise fail to improve.

Common immediate responses include enhanced alertness paired with increased calmness, improvements in gait, coordination, and balance, as well as a reduction in pain, swelling, and muscular tension. One of the most consistently observed responses is a profound state of relaxation during and after this non-invasive therapy.

Animals frequently display visible signs of relaxation throughout treatment, including lowering the head, deep sighing, bending or resting a hind limb, licking and chewing, yawning, and softening of posture. These responses indicate a shift toward parasympathetic nervous system activity and improved physiological balance.

Clinical observations have shown that approximately 25% of patients achieve stability or resolution within 1–6 sessions, 50% respond within 6–12 sessions, and the remaining 25% may require 12–24 sessions to reach similar outcomes, particularly in long-standing or complex conditions.

THE ACUSCOPE AND MYOPULSE COMPARED TO OTHER ELECTRICAL STIMULATION DEVICES

The Acuscope and Myopulse differ fundamentally from conventional electrical stimulation devices in that they deliver therapy using micro-amperage current. Micro-current—defined as electrical current below one milliamp—is the same level of current naturally generated by cells throughout the body during normal physiological function.

In contrast, most traditional nerve stimulation devices, such as TENS units, deliver milli-amperage current designed to bombard tissue and temporarily block pain signals from reaching the brain. While this approach may provide short-term pain relief, it does not address the underlying cause of dysfunction. The Acuscope and Myopulse, by comparison, deliver only the precise level of current required to gently encourage nerve and muscle fibers to resume normal electrical conduction and communication.

Unlike conventional TENS devices, which are limited to temporary symptom relief, Acuscope and Myopulse treatments produce cumulative and long-term therapeutic effects when administered as a series. Numerous scientific studies have demonstrated that micro-current therapy has a profoundly beneficial impact on living tissue. Conversely, traditional TENS devices and high-voltage stimulation modalities that elicit tetanic (artificial) muscle contraction have been shown to inhibit, reduce, or, in some cases, disrupt the body’s ability to produce the cellular energy necessary for self-repair.

At the cellular level, micro-current therapy has been shown to:

  • Open voltage-sensitive calcium ion channels

  • Normalize cell membrane potential

  • Restore sodium pump function

  • Increase protein synthesis by approximately 30–40%

  • Increase ATP production (cellular energy) by up to 500%

These effects help explain why delivering electrical current that mirrors the body’s natural physiological levels supports regenerative metabolic activity and promotes true tissue repair, rather than temporary symptom suppression.
